As a member of the Diocese of Texas, St. Mary's participates in the Diocesan Mission Funding process. Mission Funding is the way that we as individual congregations voluntarily join other congregations in our diocese to reach out as One Church, empowered by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to minister to others, to share God’s love and to transform lives. Our Parish supports the Lampasas Mission by collecting non-perishable food items on the first Sunday of each month, as well as making quarterly cash donations. We also have a food drive in conjunction with the Halloween Event that our Youth Group Sponsors.
Lampasas Mission, staffed by volunteers only, has served the people of Lampasas County since 2002. In 2008 the mission provided food to 2,296 households, which equated to 7866 individuals. Of that 2,296 households, 179 were new households. The mission also opened a clothes closet in January of 2009. The Lampasas County community has stepped forward with donations of food, money, clothing, household items, and their time in order to serve those who are in need and St. Mary's is proud to be part of this initiative.
Lampasas Mission is located on East Fourth Street near the bridge and they are open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00–3:00 p.m. and Monday evenings 6:00–8:00 p.m. from June until September. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00–3:00 p.m. from September until May. St. Mary's has adopted a 2 mile portion of East Highway 190 as part of the Texas Department of Transportation Adopt-A-Highway Program, giving us an opportunity to help keep Texas Beautiful! Parishioners participate in trash pickup events that are scheduled at least 4 times a year -- one of which coincides with the Texas Trash-off Annual Event, which is held each year in April.
The Adopt-a-Highway program began in Texas in 1985 and continues to grow, saving taxpayer’s money and keeping our rights-of-way clean. Following Texas’ lead, other states have created an Adopt-a-Highway program, and officials from Great Britain, Japan, and South Africa have visited Texas to learn more about starting programs of their own. This Texas-born program has spread to 49 states, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and Mexico. More than 1.3 million volunteers participate in Adopt-a-Highway nationwide. Parish members are invited participate in the United Thank Offering by taking a UTO blue box home and making daily offerings of thanksgiving. St. Mary's ECW oversees the collection of blue boxes bi-annually and sends the collection to the United Thank Offering organization.
The Mission of the United Thank Offering is to invite people to offer daily prayers of thanksgiving to God and outward and visible signs of those prayers which will benefit others.
God calls each of us to grow in awareness of God, our own relationship with God, and our relationship in community with all whom God has created. As habits of daily thankful prayer mature, our personal relationship with God grows. Daily prayers of thanksgiving strengthen our being and doing. The blue box can be a reminder of our many blessings. Uniting our own gifts of thanks with those of others keeps us in thankful relationship them and with all of creation. In sharing our thank offerings with those throughout the Communion who seek to address compelling human need and extend the mission of the Church, we deepen our sense of participation in the lives of others. The shared prayer and money offerings help others to respond to God's call and to grow in their own deepened sense of living within the greater Christian community. Through our shared stories, God calls us to continue to grow into the fullness of the Kingdom.
Our Parish provides dinner for the "His Kids" youth group on the 4th Monday of each month at Grace Fellowship Church in Lampasas. His Kids is a ministry that began in the 70's by a man with a Huge heart for kids. His name is Richard Williams and he was a DPS officer at the time. The kids began calling this man Big R. Geared toward kids that needed help and guidance, His Kids provides a weekly meeting with dinner, provides the kids with cloths, and sends them to bible camp in the summer in Comfort Texas. Big R and his team of volunteers help to allow these kids to feel accepted and to learn to live a more positive life by getting on the right path.
